YARDWORK SAFETY

Yardwork is war! Before revving up the mower, grabbing the shovel or hefting that bag of mulch prepare yourself for the battle. Below are some tips to keep your neck and back from being a casualty.

  • Start from the ground up with protective and supportive shoes. Don’t make yardwork be the last stop for those broken down sneakers. Quality footwear helps protect your feet from injury while helping minimize back stress.
  • Think good posture as you mow, rake or even plant the garden: Back straight, head up.
  • Respect the heat: Get started early or later. Midday sun and heat can be a stress to your heart and skeletal muscles. Drinking lots of water, wearing a hat and loose fitting clothes will help keep you cool. Gloves are always a good idea.
  • When performing standing chores like raking or pruning, use an alternating scissor stance (one foot up, one back) to reduce back strain.
  • While lifting, bending over is stressful to your back, twisting is stressful to your back, twisting while bending is HAZARDOUS to your back. Lift with your knees, keeping your back straight then twist. If you can’t make the lift this way, get some help. It’s a lot more macho to ask for help lifting than to ask for help to get to Dr. Hall’s office.
