Duck Feet Cause Back Pain

Eighty percent of the population will have low back pain at some point in their lives. All parts of our body ultimately work together as a single system. The feet are literally the structural foundation of this system. This foundation has many important roles. It supports our weight, it moves us, provides balance, absorbs shock and adapts to changing terrain.

We are actually born with flat feet. Over time our arches develop. By about age five or six we have developed strong, flexible arches. As our lives progress, the repetitive stresses of daily life often cause the arches of the feet to slowly collapse. Consider the stresses that your feet undergo every day. We easily understand how the stress of activities like running and jumping can have on our feet. Everyday stressors like standing and walking can also eventually stress the feet beyond their capacity to ‘bounce back’.

If there is inadequate support from your feet, the spine will be exposed to abnormal stress that may eventually develop into low back pain. Researchers have found that alteration of normal foot mechanics “can adversely influence the normal functions of the ankle, knee, hip, and even the spine.” According to this study published in 2017, custom orthotics are clinically PROVEN to reduce low back pain by 34.5%. Overpronation of the feet can interfere directly with normal spinal function in the following ways:

  • Abnormal rotational stresses on the spine
  • Chronic sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Excessive shock transmission
  • Pelvic unleveling due to leg length imbalance

Overpronation can be identified visually by deviation of the Achilles tendon during weight-bearing, and the collapse of the longitudinal and transverse arches. The fastest and easiest way to identify overpronation and arch collapse is through a 3D scan of the feet. Hall Chiropractic uses state of the art technology to map the feet using a 3D laser. This allows us to assess the integrity and balance of the arches of the feet. Balancing the feet with true, custom orthotics benefits your body by improving foot alignment to maintain knee, hip, pelvis and spinal balance. Improved balance and alignment help prevent joint pain and degeneration.
