Chiropractic for a Happier Pregnancy

Most women will experience low back and/or pelvic pain during pregnancy which usually increases as the pregnancy advances. 1 Mechanical stressors are a natural occurrence during pregnancy. First, there’s weight gain followed by an anterior shift of the body’s center of gravity along with an exaggerated forward curve of the low back. These changes are exacerbated by loosening of the lumbopelvic ligaments, creating altered posture and even changing gait patterns.  Chiropractic is a proven safe, effective, drug-free way to manage these symptoms before, during and after pregnancy. 2

Low Back Pain

Mechanical stress on the lumbar spine is the main conspirator to low back pain during pregnancy. Forward shift of the spine causes muscle tension and a change in walking pattern. All this is aggravated by one’s level of activities including home, work and recreation. 2 Oh, but it doesn’t end there. Low back pain can also continue into the postpartum period as well.

Sciatic Nerve Pain

Next, the tight muscles and growing baby can compress and irritate the sciatic nerve and even associated blood vessels causing low back, butt and radiating leg pain.

Sacroiliac Pain

To allow space for the growing fetus and in preparation for delivery, hormonal changes cause the ligaments which stabilize the pubic symphysis and sacroiliac joints to loosen. The resulting shifts can often cause pain in the low back which often radiates into the hips. Also called Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction, this condition produces pain and limitation of mobility. It also may contribute to instability of the bony pelvis, further contributing to the pain complex.

Round Ligament Pain

Ligaments suspend the uterus in the pelvic cavity, connecting to the abdominal wall. These ligaments stretch during growth of the uterus often causing pain on the sides of the abdomen or near the pubic bones and labia.
