Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. The most common type of scoliosis develops in childhood, usually age 11 and older, most typical in females and has no distinct cause. This is known as an idiopathic scoliosis. A scoliosis can also develop in adulthood. These may be ‘created’ by such things as neurological involvement or an injury to the spine or lower limb. This is known as an acquired or adult scoliosis. Whether idiopathic or acquired, the classic sign is abnormal lateral bending of the spine. Interestingly, the initial change begins with abnormal rotation of the spine. Though often subtle, it is evidenced by a unilateral ‘humping’ of the rib cage.

Regardless of the origin or remarkable characteristics, the scoliosis can be quite debilitating with pain and muscle spasm as the outstanding symptoms. In rare cases, breathing can be impaired. While the scoliosis is painless, these spinal imbalances often cause nerve irritation, muscle contraction and may lead to degenerative changes of the spinal joints and discs. Most scoliosis are mild and the goal of treatment is diminished pain through improved function.

The only proven method for straightening scoliosis is surgery. This is a radical procedure and should only be performed if disabling progression is imminent. Chiropractic and other treatments are aimed at checking / halting advancement while managing symptoms to improve quality of life. Studies show that Chiropractic care is a safe, proven holistic approach which can diminish curvature, reduce pain and improve disability among folks with scoliosis. 1.
