Pillow Talk for a Better Night’s Sleep

Just as an unsupportive mattress can really do a number on your body, the wrong pillow can be equally harmful to your health. Improper rest may lead to a myriad of health issues including weight gain and hormone imbalances. Neck pain, headache and tingling or numbness in the arms and hands are often caused or aggravated by poor sleep postures as well.

Most people sleep on their back and side sometime during the night. These are two completely different postures for your neck. While sleeping on your side, your pillow should keep your head up so that your neck is straight, aligned with the rest of your spine. While on your back, your pillow should not lift your head up but rather support the natural forward curve of your neck. Remember this is a sleeping pillow not a TV watching pillow.

There is NO proper posture for stomach sleeping. Twisting your neck is the only practical way to breathe while lying on your stomach. Propping your head up on a pillow while on your stomach adds even more stress to your neck.

Also important is that your head weighs as much as a bowling ball. Your pillow should be dense enough to support that weight all night. It should be obvious now that a typical pillow is not appropriate for side and back sleeping. Hall Chiropractic offers a unique type of pillow that is fitted to your specific size and offers the unique design and density to allow your neck to rest and recover from a hard day’s work.
